Ashes You Leave Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Well the final preparations for the abum promotion are on the menu for the last several weeks. The usual stuff, radio and magazine interviewes, booking concerts and so on.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?
I think that the sound on our new album is quite different from the sound we had on our
previous records. It is a natural progression from our previous album Songs of the Lost. The songs are darker and more heavier than on the previous records and there are a lot of male vocals on this one. The thing that makes it unique to our discography is that this record is guitar oriented. Not that the violins and keyboards are not represented on this recording, but the main focus is on the guitars. We wanted it to sound very organic so we didn't use the modern and overused methods of production like re-amping, dubbing the guitars or using digital effects. It's just the band playing with our own gear! So the album has a really live sound to it. This album also marks the return of the flute in our sound, which was absent for the past few records, and of course there is a new vocalist whose performance is quite amazing.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?
I always write songs about the things that happen to me and things that affect me in my life. This album as whole is basically a chronological diary of some major events in my personal life. It talks about the events that happened in the period of the last few years. I used a lot of  double meanings, synonims and equivocations, but in the end they are all true stories. Since life has a tendency to serve bad things and those come in clusters, the lyrics on this record have an overall dark feel to them. I used all the bad energy that the modern life offers you and wrote this really dark and personal album. The experience was in one word chatharsic. So The Cure for Happines was a perfect name for it.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
The band was formed back in the 95' under the strong influence of the British doom metal bends. It was the golden era for doom metal, My dying bride; Anathema, Paradise lost and Cathedral were on the peak of their careers. As all fans, the band members at that time were also highly influenced by their musical idols so when time arose to name the band; we chose the name Ashes you leave as homage to a song from Cathedral's „The Ethereal Mirror“album. The name of the song also had a personal meaning and it was perfect for a young doom band.
5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
It's hard to choose a single show from a seventeen year long career, but I can name three. The first one was back in 2004. on the Metal Female Voices festival in Brussels. We played a lot of festivals before but all those were open airs.  This was the first time that we played in front of a crowd this big in an arena. It was breathtaking, scary and one of those moments that you remember your whole life. The second was Brutal Assault festival in Jaromer in 2009. All big open airs are great shows but the hospitality and the kindness of the festival promoters in Czech Republic has jet to be paralleled. In the end we stayed for four days there and we had a blast. The last but not the least was  a club gig in our home town in Rijeka. It was in 2009, it was the promotion of our Songs of the Lost record and it was simply great! Really personal and emotional.
As far as the performance goes, we try to fit in as many songs as we can. We have six records now and almost all our songs are quite long so we just try to make the best possible set list that in the same time promotes the new album but also includes a song from each of our records. This is impossible on festivals since the time is always limited but we try to make the best of it.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
There are always plans, but in these times there are no certainties. We will start promoting our record in December but at this point in time there are no plans for major touring. You'll be able to see us in the festival season next summer all over Europe.

7. Currently you are signed to Rock 'N' Growl Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support that they have given you so far?
We finished our record on the 30th of December 2011, that was our last day in the studio. As soon as it was done, with the help of our manager, we started looking for a new record label. There were a lot of offers, a lot of negotiations, but since the times have changed, the majority of these were about if we were willing to pay the label and how much. We have released five records in our career and we have been around since '95 so we thought that four our 6th record we have to have an honest and  fair record deal. This is when our manager stepped in. His name is Axel and he is also the owner of the Rock N Growl Records. In the time he has been managing us he became a real partner of the band and our friend. So we recieved a really fair deal and as far as the promotion is concerned he is working his ass off for us. We are really happy with how we have been treated so far.
8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your new album by fans of doom and gothic metal that have heard it so far?
So far we released only one new song, Summers End, and the response so far was great! There are a lot of people that are following us, they'we been waiting for three years for a new record, and reaction was overwhelming. We are really humbled by the kind words and praises. They accepted our new vocalist, Giada, straight away and generally I think that everybody likes the new sound of the bend. The media recieved our record in advance, for promotional purposes, and the reviews have been more than positive. Every day we are getting requests for interviews and reviews from all over the globe and I think there is a big interest for this record.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future release?A few years ago we signed an endorsement deal with a Polish guitar and bass manufacturer called Mayones. We recieved three completely custom instruments that were made to our specifications. The major difference from our previous instruments is that we switched to seven-stringed guitars. A lot of the music, and sound a band has, is influenced by the instrument he plays. So a big portion of this record was solely inspired by these amazing new instruments that we have. As for the future, I think we will explore even deeper the possibilities that the new tonal range offers us. In the end there are four of us writing the music, Berislav, Marta, Matija and myself, so everything is possible. One thing is certain we won't limit ourselves with genres as long as we feel the music we write. Dark and heavy are the guidelines.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
To tell the truth there are seven of us and in between we are listening everything from classical music to extreme death metal. Personally I don't like to listen to music when I'm writing it just gets in the way. I still listen to a lot of doom metal both new and old, old gothic and some more extreme bands as well.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
We all work in the band so our main activitiy, beside working, is Ashes You Leave. Bero and Marta have a baby girl together so they are busy juggling between parenting, working and being in a band. As for myself, when I have the time, I love mountaineering, traveling and cooking.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?I would like to thank you for this interview and the chance to introduce our band. To all the readers; we have a new album coming out on november 29 via Rock N Growl Records so check it out.
Keep the doom flame alive!

On behalf of Ashes You Leave,
Luka Petrovic

Ashes You Leave/The Cure For Happiness/Rock N Growl Records/2012 CD Review

Ashes  You  Leave  are  a  band  that  started  out  as  a  doom/death  metal  band  but  have  evolved  into  a  more  gothic/doom  metal  direction  over  the  years  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "The  Cure  For  Happiness"  which  was  released  by  Rock  N  Growl  Records.

Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  not  much  in  the  way  of  fast  playing  or  blast  beats,  while the  violins  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric  and  gothic  sound  to  the  music  along  with  some  keyboards  being  utilized  at  times,  as  for the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  and  powerful  tone  with  heavy  and  melodic  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  gothic/doom  metal  riffs  with  a  good  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  doom/gothic  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  full  chords,  finger  picking  and  dark  riffs  to  add  more  darkness  and  depression  to  the  music.

Vocals  are  mostly  clean  singing  female  gothic  metal  vocals  with  some  harsh  sounding  whispers  and  deep  death  metal  growls  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressing  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  Ashes  You  Leave  are  a  very  great  sounding  gothic/doom/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Devil  In  Disguise"  "The  Ever  Changing"  "Summers  End"  and  "For  Happiness".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Spylown Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
We are now working on the promo of the second album. We are also looking for a new singer because Josué will not anymore sing with us. He will anyway perform the next shows, so there will be no break in the shows.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album?
We wanted something different as all the actual “metal” production. We didn’t use drums triggers, a just a few of editing. In the end it sounds almost like a good old death metal album! All has been as far as possible in one take recorded, in our bandroom. So the sound is maybe not so clean and precise but in our way, more natural.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
I’m the drummer, so I have no idea about the lyrics...! Seriously, one remaining theme is the media mass manipulation.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Spylown comes from “c’pylône”, what means “the long haired otter swims in a giant lake of beer” in latin from the north hungary.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
The released party from “Depth”, was one of our best last concert. Lots of friends, very good feelings and we played not so bad too. Except the first song, damn we failed the first song... but then everything was alright and we came safely home.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
Yes. We will continue playing very small places and concert, with a few people, with free beer.

7. On  a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal and hardcore?
We have now doubled the amount of fans around the world, from 1 to 2. I think that the world promotion of the new album is not so good... maybe we need a contract with Universal.

8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
I have now started to play with Blind Slavery. Greg plays also with Pars Ici since a year. Soli is planning a new band with old members of Lee Harvey Oswald and Josué has way too many project and band (Macadam Dive, Remove The Paper Before To Fix On The Floor) to talk about.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We are working on including melodic parts to our music, to reach something a bit more rock’n’roll. We will continue writing with special time signatures and chaotic structures, but not so extreme like on this album. Maybe something more spontaneous, like when you meet in the band room, start playing what comes in you head and compose a 5 minutes song in less than 2 minutes. It will be a real change I think, regarding to the first and second album. But we have really lot of fun playing together and the goal is to keep this fun at any price. We’re getting old...!

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
A good old influence is Meshuggah, and bands like Gojira, The Dillinger Escape Plan. I’m still listening to all these bands, and I’m also a big fan of classical music. Soli is always a big fan of stoner, bands like Color Haze, Kyuss... Greg and Josué listen to a lot of different music style, I’m too bored to talk about that.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Beer. Movies. Games. Eat.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Long live the otters!

The  Gathering  are  a b and  from  the  Netherlands  that  has  a  history  that  goes  back  more  than  20 years  with  their  music  starting  out  as  being  death/doom  metal  but  then  evolved  into  a  gothic  metal  band  then  changing  their  style  to  atmospheric  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Disclosure"  which  was  released  by  Psychonaut  Records.

Revolting Interview

> 1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
>
> The new album, Hymns of Ghastly Horror, is just about to be released. Other than that we are not doing much, we are awaiting the storm of praise or shit haha. Hopefully itll be mostly praise as we are very satisfied with this album.
>
>
> 2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous recordings?
>
> Revolting as its own sound I think, but album by album we have moved more towards catchy choruses within the more heavy and old school stuff. So I think this album is just that, heavy and dirty but with a good amount of catchiness and good choruses thrown in there as well. Also the sound is the best so far for Revotling. Ronnie Björnström really mixed and mastered this album well. Its very heavy and powerful.
>
>
> 3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?
>
> Its like on the previous album, a bunch of classic horror movies that are the base for the lyrics. dez who writes the lyrics, aswell as does the artworks and layout, is a horror movie freak, he knows everything really and his lyrics are awesome versions of the moives really. Also theres one song not based on a movie, Kinderfeeder, which is just as creepy though.
>
>
> 4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
>
> that you will have to ask Billy at Razorback Records haha! The name was his idea, just as the idea for the band really. But I think he simply wanted a name that described the music and lyrics, and I think its a killer name.
>
>
> 5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would your stage performance?
>
> revotling has not played any shows! we are a studio band only, at least so far. we have had offers, very good offers, but we feel that we want to spend our time on the albums instead. But you never know, one day we might get ready for live shows as well.
>
>
> 6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
>
> No.
>
>
> 7. On a worldwide level hos has the feedback been to your music by death metal fans?
>
> the feedback has been just great, reviews and comments from fans has been so good. it seems we do something right, as so many people seem to enjoy our music and albums.
>
>
> 8. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?
>
> Paganizer will do a new album in april next year, the Grotesquery just released an album, also there are plans for new Demiurg stuff, might or might not happen though. Time will tell.
>
>
> 9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
>
> I think this album aswell as the last one is really how I want Revolting to sound. I want it to sound more like this really haha, more melodies and more hevainess, and and killer mixing aswell. So we will work to make every album better than the previous, as we have done that so far I think.
>
>
> 10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
>
> For Revolting I must say that both death metal aswell as dbeat and melodic punk has been something weve listened to and taken feeling from. new music Im playing these days rae Blood Mortized and puteraeon, two excellent bands with great new albums out that everyone should check out.
>
>
> 11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
>
> Drinking beer, and hanging out with my family. Im very simple haha.
>
>
> 12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Ofcorpse! Check out the new Revolting album! If you like catchy heavy rotten death metal, i think you will like it!

Strong Intention Interview

answered by zac:

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
yeah, we just released a 7" ep on Patac records entitled Razorblade Express. Its 6 songs and features Mike IX Williams on EYEHATEGOD doing vocals on 2 tracks and also has Derek Engemann from CATTLE DECAPITATION on bass. We just wrapped up a 2 week east coast tour with PHOBIA and are about to head out again on another east coast tour with MISERY INDEX.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous recordings?
Its definitely our best recording and best performance hands done Nothing else we have done comes close to this. The sound is something I always envisioned and
we finally have captured that . Past recordings, which I stand by 100%, lacked either good production, or the performance suffered due to having people in the band who really should have never been there in the first place.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
No future, no hope, no life , only pain !
Other topics are the domino principle ( you beat me, I will beat mine)
The hypocrisy of political elections
How greed and capitalism can erase a once beautiful town and turn into worthless concrete sprawl.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Have not been asked this is over 10 years. Originally the band was just going to be Intention, and then we added the Strong to it.
I cant say there is one hard reason or meaning behind it. What I can say now is that it relates to more just believing in yourself, your convictions and never ever turn and run.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
2005 Trauma Fest in Spain
2009 NYC Boat show with Eyehategod, Pig Destroyer, Goatwhore
1997 the first time we played with Agnostic Front
the 2004 tour we did with DRI
2006 @ CBGBs with Disfear , Nine Shocks Terror
just to name a few, I could list a lot more.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?
In August we are doing a week with MISERY INDEX
and then another week with ABIGAIL WILLIAMS

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your new albums by fans of sludge and doom metal?
Its been good. I think people understand we are not a doom/sludge band but do incorporate elements of that sound into our music. Then you throw
Mike IX into the mix and it makes for a pretty powerful trip.

8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
Its full time line up , but Derek our bass player is also in CATTLE DECAPITATION so that has been keeping him busy this year, so while he is out
we have Sparky Volyes (from Dying Fetus/Misery Index) playing with us and its been absolutely killer having him in the band.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
I think the path we are on now is one we as a band are pleased with. Looking to have another EP out soon or maybe a full length
we are working that out now. I think people who dig RAZORBLADE can expect more of the same on the next release.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Influences are pretty far ranging from Napalm Death to Agnostic Front to Eyehategod to INFEST to Slayer to Van Halen. I like to think we as a band
are not pigeonholed into on genre of music and I think that is a reflection of our musical influences.
Was listening to the new HIGH ON FIRE, TRAGEDY, just checked out Low Threat Profile , some old SFA, Watain.

11. Outside of music, what are some of your interests?
I like to travel , I like to spend time with my girl Fanny ( the queen of stoner/doom metal) . I just like to keep busy and not feel like
I am letting life pass me by.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thanx for reaching out for this interview
and remember, no matter what you have been told, there is no such thing as streets of gold.
